Graeme is the Regional Sports Coordinator for the top half of the South Island. He has been in his current position since 2005, but has been involved with Special Olympics since the mid 1990s.
It was then, during Graeme's business career, that he was approached by a Special Olympics New Zealand representative who was searching for some spare office space which Graeme happened to have available. Shortly after the organisation moved in, the Club Coordinator from Special Olympics Canterbury heard that Graeme was a keen basketball player and mentioned that they were on the hunt for a coach. Graeme volunteered and has been involved ever since. The Committee member who approached him has been to three World Games and is still at it.
Graeme has always enjoyed meeting people involved with Special Olympics, but he never thought he would one day be organizing events and athletes as a job! He particularly emphasizes the importance of the Special Olympics athlete oath which he thinks has great value for athletes.
He enjoys sport and feels lucky that he is able to participate in most sports, so likes to give various things a go.
In his spare time Graeme still plays basketball, along with tennis and enjoys mountain biking with his son. He and his wife, Joanne, have one son at school and one daughter at University.
