Online coach training

Welcome to our initial series of online training modules, these modules have been set up within our overall coaching framework as a way for people to extend their training or to start on the path to becoming a coach.

Coaching Special Olympics athletes is a rewarding and often challenging experience and one that requires continual development. Now our coaches and volunteers keen to begin coaching, can upskill and train online. There is no need to attend separate two or three hour workshops, you can now work through the modules at your own pace, in your own time.
Classroom based workshops will still be available to those people who wish to complete their coaching training via this method, please contact Mike Ryan for more information.
Additional modules will be available in the coming months that look at other aspects and areas of our framework. These will include an introduction to coaching (based on SPARC’s ‘Getting Started’ courses).
There will also be modules based on more technical aspects of coaching and each sport and that review event management.
On the successful completion of a module if you are already a registered Special Olympics New Zealand volunteer, you will receive a certificate and your training history will be entered against your personal information held at our National Office.
If you are a new volunteer we will contact you to discuss the volunteering and coaching options available to you within our Special Olympics New Zealand programme.

Ready to begin?

  • Please choose one of the four modules from the left menu that you wish to complete, if you are a new volunteer we recommend you start with the ‘Orientation’ module first.  If you wish to become an accredited Special Olympics New Zealand coach then it is a requirement that you complete the 'Protective Behaviours' module along with signing the Coaches Code of Ethics.
  • If you are not already logged in to the website you will be asked to do so, if you are a first time user you will be required to register.  Please complete as many of the fields as possible.
  • Please note that your username will be your email address.
  • The training module will then commence.
Ensure you read each page carefully, after each section you will be asked a series of questions. Please note that you will not be able to go ‘back’ within the training.  Each module should take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.
Good luck!
