At the Special Olympics 2009 National Summer Games, 34 volunteer clinical professionals and optometry students screened athletes’ eyes through Special Olympics Lions Club Opening Eyes.
The team tested 654 athletes; 256 had not had an eye exam in the last three years and 326 (49.8%) were found to have eye disease.
Prescription eye wear was given to 257 athletes; 181 athletes received sunglasses and 14 athletes were given protective sports goggles.
All athletes were given education on eye care.
