Our sports

Special Olympics New Zealand currently offers the following 13 sports. Click on the sport to learn more.

  • Depending on ability, athletes can compete in Super G, Slalom, Giant Slalom, walk or glide races.
  • Swimming is a life skill that is taught to ensure safety and also for sports and competition.
  • A wide range of track and field events are available for athletes of all abilities.
  • The basketball programme offers many opportunities including 5-a-side team competitions.
  • Bocce is very similar to English lawn bowls and French petanque.
  • Athletes can compete in 10-frame regulation play in singles, doubles and teams.
  • Riders can compete in: dressage, equitation, obstacle trails and gymkhana events.
  • Football is undergoing much growth and development in Special Olympics New Zealand.
  • In golf, athletes can participate in skills, nine-hole or 18 hole training and competition.
  • Indoor bowls is relatively easy to learn and athletes can compete in a range of events.
  • Powerlifting offers squat, bench press, dead lift and combination lifts.
  • Athletes can compete in Super G, Slalom, Giant Slalom or glide races.
  • Table tennis competitions include skills and game play.
