VOLUNTEERS

Special Olympics takes place in over 40 towns and cities around New Zealand due to the time, energy, commitment and skills of the hundreds of volunteers who assist throughout the country. We aim to:

  • Provide training for 44-46 weeks in each year, to encourage fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Have quality coaching and competition programmes for all sports.
  • To enable as many athletes as possible to participate, train and compete in a wide variety of sports events.
  • To assist athletes develop sports, social skills, build friendships and team spirit through their sports training and competition.
  • To promote and assist the inclusion of people with an intellectual disability in community events and activities.

If you are a current volunteer or have helped us in the past, thank you! If you are considering volunteering for Special Olympics, welcome!

Who can volunteer?
Individuals, groups, families….anyone can volunteer, all of us have skills that can enhance the lives of others in our community. Volunteers come from all walks of life: students, sports officials, teachers, coaches, senior citizens, family members, corporate employees, business people, new immigrants, service clubs, tertiary courses, and community and church groups. There are many different roles for volunteers within the organisation. To enjoy volunteering with Special Olympics New Zealand you need; a ‘can do’ attitude, be open to learning and undertaking training where appropriate, ability to work as part of a team and time to invest. You will be asked to adhere to the Special Olympics New Zealand Principles, Procedures and Code of Conduct, including:

  • Set a good example for the athletes
  • Carry out tasks in line with Special Olympics New Zealand rules and procedures
  • Be aware of health and safety procedures
  • Help promote awareness of Special Olympics
  • Be encouraging and positive to athletes

What help is needed?
Special Olympics needs people to cover a wide range of activities and tasks, not all involve interaction with athletes or attendance at sports training/competitions, so there is something for everyone. The three broad areas of assistance needed are:

  • Programme Volunteers: Direct involvement with athletes at sports training and competition
  • Administration Volunteers: A variety of tasks that support the local programme
  • Event Volunteers: Planning, managing or assisting at sports, social, fundraising events.
